Sophia is a Fine Art Contemporary Wildlife and Nature Artist, specialising in high quality oil paintings. Known for her powerfully evocative paintings created through vibrant colours, light and intricate detail, with some of her art embellished with 24ct Gold and Silver leaf and it has been said many times to have “a spiritual feel to it”.
AN EYE FOR DETAIL
An artist often sees what others only catch a glimpse of.
Sophia Chalklen is a contemporary British artist known for her atmospheric oil paintings celebrating the beauty, light and emotion of the natural world. Working across landscape and wildlife, her distinctive paintings combine expressive texture, intricate detail and, in selected works, precious metallic leaf.
Sophia studied at Winchester School of Art, graduating with a BA specialising in Textile Design. After working as a designer for leading high-street brands, she was headhunted by renowned Crown Jewellers Asprey & Garrard, where she became a fine jewellery designer. Her work included tiaras, jewellery, watches and intricate objets d’art created for royalty and prestigious international clients. Her training in gemmology and design developed the meticulous eye for colour, detail and craftsmanship that continues to influence her paintings today.
After starting a family, Sophia returned increasingly to her first love of painting. What began as a personal creative outlet developed into a successful career as a full-time artist, with her work now collected in the UK and internationally.
Her paintings have been exhibited and sold through galleries and major international art fairs in the UK and overseas, including London, New York, Austin and Singapore. Her work ranges from immersive woodland and landscapes filled with light and movement to finely observed wildlife, often incorporating gold and metallic leaf.
Nature remains at the heart of Sophia’s work. She aims to capture not simply a place or an animal, but the atmosphere and emotion of experiencing it. She also uses her art to support wildlife and conservation causes.
